Moodle: Activities

Move a course beyond content delivery into active learning

Moodle offers a range of activities that can help move a course beyond simply sharing content. When used purposefully, these tools can encourage participation, collaboration, reflection, discussion, and more active student engagement within the learning environment. This practical session explores how selected Moodle activities support different teaching and learning needs:

Interactive Activities – Using Moodle tools to create opportunities for students to participate actively rather than only access learning materials
Collaboration and Discussion – Exploring activities that support communication, peer interaction, and collaborative learning
Student Engagement – Choosing activities that encourage students to contribute, respond, reflect, and remain involved throughout the course
Activity Design – Matching Moodle activities to the intended learning purpose so that each activity contributes meaningfully to the student learning experience

A well-organised Moodle course makes it easier for students to navigate their learning, locate resources, and stay engaged across the semester. Structuring content clearly and consistently creates a more intuitive experience that supports student success and reduces confusion.

Course structure – design a logical, consistent layout that is easy for students to follow
Content organisation – arrange resources, topics and sections to improve navigation and accessibility
Labels and visual design – use headings, labels, icons and formatting for a clean, engaging course page
Course management – simple techniques that improve the student experience and keep courses easier to maintain

MEA: Motivation, Engagement & Alignment

Design learning experiences that engage and meaningfully align

Effective teaching goes beyond delivering content—it requires thoughtful learning design that motivates students, sustains their engagement, and ensures every learning activity contributes meaningfully towards the intended outcomes. The MEA framework provides a practical approach to designing learning experiences that are purposeful, engaging, and constructively aligned.

Motivation – Designing learning experiences that capture students' interest, establish relevance, and encourage active participation from the outset
Engagement – Creating meaningful learning activities that sustain attention, promote interaction, and encourage deeper learning throughout the module
Alignment – Ensuring that learning outcomes, teaching and learning activities, and assessments are constructively aligned to provide a coherent learning experience

This interactive instructional design workshop is highly practical and collaborative. Participants will work through examples and apply the MEA framework to one of their own modules, leaving with ideas and strategies that can be implemented immediately.
